My name is Keren Tooill; I’m an undergraduate working towards an English and Creative Writing major at Ohio University. I’ve been writing prose fiction for nearly a decade now, but I didn’t consider myself to be much of a poet before I took a class with Dr. Haugen this past semester.
(an imitation of Suzzane Allen’s “Carousels Are Falling from Our Lives”)
Again. One, two, three more come flocking
back, dismantling my perfect peace.
Who will come next? I would love to have
silence. Freedom to do as I pleased,
with only my dreams to judge me. Wander
aimlessly throughout the house, a book
in hand, socks on feet, a story on my
mind. Time flying by like a carousel
faster and faster. Something calming
in the inevitability of time. Merry music
looped, that they would hate. Rising
falling, all on my own. I am scared
that I will lose myself to them again.
