Watermelon Void

Take a moment to creep
on the void, looking over
the edge at your own reflection;
somewhere out there the future
lies about your fortunes and the drift
of age, but there’s nothing
a cold watermelon can’t cure,
drawing out the screams in wet
wedges that wash away cares;
a moment of hope in brain freeze
and sticky fingers, so sweet
to lick again in the firefly haze,
humidity like fog rolling down
off a mountain as tall as the moon,
as old as the moon, and cresting
now like a typhoon wave
just before you go under

A Little Vanity in Everyone

Marching upon the green
comes a squirrel battalion,
giddy and gay and eager to re-enact
the Fall of Troy,
drunk on acorn beer
and filled to bursting with pizza
crusts, French fries, and the peanuts
left by the peanut lady
on her own trek through
the park—this stage
where tourists are brought
down for the slaughter
and a few photos of the white
house; here we see
life renewed as of old,
eat or be eaten,
and those determined to feed
come a-soldiering in dress
plumage and photogenic fluff,
for they know who will
survive this great game,
and it won’t be the ones
playing dice with the futures
and the bonds of those citizens
of the world, hidden away
in ticker taped dens
with screens alight and sealed
against this gorgeous weather,
perfect for Miss Helen
of Troy, her bottlebrush tail
finger combed out
in the chittering gaze
of foot soldiers hoping
for a moment
in her sun
