Let Your Hands Remember
Digging in Tully West, Kildare, Ireland
Wind complains, shivers each branch overhanging the site
boxed and numbered, a register of time from stone and peat:
bowls of promise, full of wheat or coin, lavender or wyrt.
Trace the painted wings –
glaze cracked, dancing, skirting the lip and belly.
Shaved clay flakes, ridges engraved
with the potter’s prints, voice baked
in fire and steam singing, still singing.
Mead Moon rising, a chalked horse glints on the hill
as honeyed notes of the wren echo in the hedgerow.
Life interrupted – caught between then and now
as sunset searches the leaves, the earth for more.
