After Saying Goodbye

All winter long she told herself a love story.
Now spring has come with moonlight
in its mouth and seeds of summer doubt.
She who always specialized in the impossible—
what will she do now? She will sleep
in the arms of the sun. She will
take long showers, just so she can sing.
On the train to her vague future she passes
a scrap metal dump in Trenton. She hears this:
Nothing that has roots can also have wings.
