REM
Whatever it was that set my jaw free
from chewing on the dream’s last scene,
no credits rolled off the screen of my tongue,
no cosmic banter interrupted breakfast
and my stomach’s bear-in-heat kind of growl.
The longer you listen, the clearer it becomes,
this blindfolded beggar of a life.
That cup in my hand is a mercy test.
It loves when tears conspire with coins
to wash the hours with giving,
hates when morning’s blood-red sky,
means one more nest is missing a worm,
missing a beak and a song.
Whatever it was that set my jaw free
left me drooling with the rest of the world,
clueless, twitching and scared.
