On St. Laurent

Kids on scooters weave in and out
of pedestrians on the crowded sidewalk
below the rise to Mount Royal.

Car is unloaded and parked four blocks away.
We’ve uncorked a bottle of cabernet
to celebrate a reunion on this cloudy day.

It goes on like this as rain steadily falls,
winds kick up, conversation flows
easily from topic to topic.

Ten years since we last sat together
in their London flat after my book launch,
no rain then, but much talk of poetry.

Next morning the sun cooperates. After pots
of espresso and an apricot tart, we meander up
the hill to the cool shade of Portuguese Park.

We take a seat on the steps of number 28—
the home of Leonard Cohen whose words
and music brought us to this place.
