On The Importance of SSRIs

When our docs thinned and moved away, we switched to the pediatrician
to renew my kid’s script for Zoloft. Despite years of panic attacks,
the doctor asks What is there to be anxious about anyway?
without even noting the scars, clearly self-inflicted,
on my transgender child’s shoulders and arms.

I remember once in high school, a guy friend I wasn’t even interested in
was playing basketball with a new girlfriend of his. Walking by,
I caught the ball he tossed to me, both of them smiles and
sunshine, and I tossed the ball back, thwack,
into her head. Like I’d aimed right for it.

Or the time my kid and I were driving home from the grocery store,
took the exit off 75 toward our house and watched a hawk dive
hard into the metal yellow barrier at exit ramp edge,
thrown back from his head into traffic
by his own force. What is there to be

anxious about?
