Moraine Lake Varying with the Light
Half past four: Visitors rushed up the Rockpile
to shoot the water’s colors. First light
painted it matte blue, sunrise blended in
a green tone, fleecy clouds darkened it —
ripple-free, mirror to mountains, moraine,
glacier. I took the trail along the fir-
lined north shore. Past the canoe dock, I gazed
back: the lake steel, the landscape black and white.
A glacial stream’s burble, earthy smells of
conifers’ resin, wet wood, stones. Later,
I climbed the Rockpile too, captured a scene
of liquid gemstone and wooden columns, spruce.
Turquoise. Steel. Against the pressure to choose,
I balanced on a ledge, holding both views.
