Another World

Before the trees were felled,
temperatures rose, floods and fires
swept over wild, and not so wild
land, on school break I would run
through the overgrown grass
behind our house on Nowlan Road
to the water tank enveloped
in a dense grove of evergreens
searching for arrowheads, following
the scat and tracks of deer
then high stepping through a field
of goldenrod, legs pumping, breath
huffing, eyes wide on clouds floating
on the horizon, then slide down
a thickly wooded hill over rotted
branches and leaves, jump a small
creek, cross Crocker Hill Road
and knock on the back door
of my friend Chuck Barnes
who had a rickety chicken coop
where we’d spend warm summer
nights on old Army cots talking
girls, cars, places we want to see
as we listen to the cicada rhapsody.
