At the Foot of the Bay Bridge

          Nothing’s slicker
than a midnight burger blasted
down in my father’s Ford.

          All-night drive-in, lurid
lights hum over the hot macadam
salted with skittering rats.

          Wrappers rattle. Whoosh
of invisible cars, their black speed stirs
a wind sopping

          like a stale sponge.
Night smeared with the smoke
of seared meat.

          We think our own
thoughts wrapped in darkness
thick as bay water.

          Eight-years old, I fell
for the lure of night rides, inherited
that craving for neon-splashed

          hours when Fryolators
hoist a greasy tower that billows
in the faces of wide-eyed stars.
