Roost

After three days of pelting rain,
high winds, humid air,
dusk breaks loose
in a chaotic shuffle
along the riverbank, trees
shake in a frenetic dance
as six wild turkeys
create an elevated roost
crowding each other
for space. Looking down
from their lofty perch,
feeling more secure
I imagine, not being
ambushed as they trot
through nearby fields
by men in orange vests,
unfortunate looking
hats, thick soled boots
carrying high caliber
weaponry, and a half-baked
plan of attack.
