Mary Ann Honaker

Mary Ann Honaker is the author of Becoming Persephone (Third Lung Press, 2019), and the chapbooks It Will Happen Like This (Yesno Press, 2015) and Gwen and the Big Nothing (the orchard street press, 2020).  A new full-length collection, Whichever Way the Moon, is forthcoming from Main Street Rag.  Her poems have appeared in Bear Review, JMWW, Juked, Little Patuxent Review, Rattle.com, Sweet Tree Review, and elsewhere. She currently lives in Beaver, West Virginia.

FATE

You’ve drawn a chalk circle
on the playground asphalt.
The game: I stay

inside its bounds.  I sleep,
I eat, within it.  I must not
scuff it.  You turn away.

I smear it clear with my own
hands.  You turn back:
I wipe the evidence on my dress.
