Diagram

The song is a diagram of longing
plucked from the air.

The air is a wing of possibility
stitched from shadow.

The shadow is a gown of night
sewn from the flesh of stars.

The stars peel uneasily
from the watercolors of dawn.

The dawn lays itself across
the rumpled quilt of farmland.

The farmland yields its stones
to plow and hand.

The hand sets stone
upon stone in a wall.

The wall is between us
but it cannot stop the song.
