A Reminder

for Kris

After the students were attacked
by the Federales in Mexico DF
and we headed north in a ’59 VW
with Julio who later became Juliette
tucked into the handwoven reed basket
from La Lagunilla Market
before she had her kittens,
long before the world discovered
student bodies buried in a mass grave,
we crossed the border into Texas
from there the northeast
settling a year later in LA.
Juliette and her spirited kitten
Balthasar are a warm distant memory.
The 50 centavos basket faded with age,
handle worn but still secure to hold,
rests comfortably on my office floor.
