Symphony Number Zero

Lost again
in a discord of voices,
reeds on brass, noise
threatens to blow the air
from our bodies.

We have been at this so long,
tongue wilts,
ears threaten to close
to every sound.
Is there another life?

If there is purpose
in love twisting into
whatever is love’s opposite,
which can’t be simply hate,
we haven’t learned it.

The cadenza is coming
as soon as we both tire
of the endless cadence
of argument and despair’s
one unrepentant chord.
