small victories

i came home from the hospital
and before i could even get outside my car
my wife was waiting at the door
she looked pissed
she said “there’s fucking garbage everywhere.”
i looked around and saw nothing
she said “not out here, it’s in the can. something ate through all the bags. maybe a
raccoon.”
so i took a look
sure enough the bags were shredded
and garbage was a mess in the can
i said “the garbage men will just have to pick up the can and shake it into the truck.”
she stood there
not saying a word
she crossed her arms
let out this low “hmm”
went inside
and left the door open
another day i have survived at work
another night i have conquered at home.
