sarus cranes
in the middle
of the night,
the tail
of a dream
telling me
they choose
in youth,

that pair
I saw huddled
against cold
like that
of our bodies,
naked
as fledglings,
nestled
on the roof
in sleeping bags
zipped together
and quilted
in a frost
that fell
white
on our hair
and cheeks
and pillows
except
the places
our breath
gathered.
